FARMERS’ COMPETITIONS

PRIZES PRESENTED AT HUIRANGI GREAT SUCCESS OF CHILDREN. In spite of the inclement weather there was a fair attendance at the Huirangi hall last night on the occasion of the presentation of the prizes won in connection with the Farmers’ Union and boys’ and girls’ clubs competitions. The hail was tastefully decorated and a very pleasant evening was spent. Dancimr for adults was held during the eveinng, but the brightest feature of the programme' was given by the children of the Huirangi school, and their efforts in folk dancing and singimr reflected great credit^-upon the teachers, Misses Simpsoh and :Kedgley. For the adults dances the music was played by Mesdames Pennington and G. Hall. Mr. F. Andrews, chairman of the Huirangi executive, announced that as usual the profits on the function were donated to the boys’ and'’ girls’ clubs. He then called upon,, the .president, Mr, C. H. Washer, to ptesent the trophies and certificates, tq the cliilffren. . Mr. the\ boylri and <<£ Watson deserved 7 mention on account of his second successive success in winning the Trimble Challenge Cup. Only one other boy had equalled the feat in Taranaki: While some of the children might feel envious of his success, there was no doubt that .the boy was a good example to the others in the district.

In connection with the boys’ and girls’. clubs the Trimble Challenge Cup for field . competition. Mas; again won by CyrilL Watson Mi th the best-swede .crop. The previous winners of this trophy were Joe Brown (1928) and Cyril Watson (1929). The cup for the best-kept plot was won by Jim Heppell. The following framed certificates also went to the district: Phyllis Major, third Group 5, condition, Jersey-Ayrshire calf; 1 Roy Butler, equal second Group 5, dairy type, Jersey-Ayrshire; Jim Heppell, first Group 4, mangolds; Cyril Watson, first Group 4, swedes. Mr. D. Mackay, the new instructor of the boys’ and girls’ clubs, said it was pleasing to see that the winners were such y ung and small children. Their success was due largely to then orit. The losers, too, were to be con-o-ratulated upon their effort. They had all tried to do their work well for the honour of their school and the good name of the district. He congratulated the district and the school on.the.-meri-torious performances of the childien. Mr. A- Hall, president of the Huirangi branch of the Farmers’ Union, remarked that the Huirangi people had responded well''in entering for th© various classes,?/ ; Mr. D. Le C. Morgan, secretary of the Taranaki executive of the Farmers’ Union'; apologised for the absence .of the president, Mr.. H. E. Blyde. He stated the c.repetitions were producing new ideas which were enabling the farmers to ‘improve and increase production without seriously increasing the cost. ■ Mr. J. M. Smith, ot the Department of Agriculture, in presenting the prizes, congratulated the farmers of the district. The stack ensilage cup for Taranaki had again been won in the district, but the successful exhibitor belonged to the Hillsborough branch of, the union. Thus the Huirangi district had won the cup in two out of the three years the competitions had been held, and in what was the strongest class. .
