DEBATING SEASON ENDS

SMOKE CONCERT IN N. PLYMOUTH. The New Plymouth Debating Society brought its season to a close last, night with an enjoyable smoke conceit in trie Kawaroa Park bungalow. Mr. H. W. Instill, vice-president, presided. The principal toasts were “The Debating Society (Mr. Gordon Fraser—the Rev. C. Eaton), “The chairmen and judges” (Mr. Insull—Mr.- R. H. Quillium. president of the society) and “The Ladies (Mr. A. C. Fookes —Mr. G. Macallan). Mr. Quilliam presented Mr. J. Palmer with the president’s trophy for the most improved speaker. 'I here were a. number of impromptu speeches of a happy nature. Messrs. R. L. Cooper, Ediftondston, R. Day and J. C. Maxwell contributed items interspersed among the toasts and Mr. Instill led community singing. Mr. W. E. Brown, Hokitika, formerly vice-president of the society, sent a telegram expressing good wishes.
