TAX ON ALSATIAN DOGS
TEN SHILLINGS THE LIMIT. A statement that, according to the Act, local bodies • cannot raise the tax on Alsatian dogs, above 10s, as the Manawatu L anil P. Association is sugWestino- they should, do, was made by the cliairmau of the Kairanga County Council, Mr. J- J- Batchelor, when the matter came e the council. The show association advised that it had modified its attitude with regard to barrino- the Alsatian breed from the show 'benches in consideration of the local Kennel Club indemnifying the association from any possible damage and criviiig an undertaking to put up barriers to prevent interference with the dogs while on the show benches. At the same time the show association committee wished to convey a respectful request, to local licensing bodies that the do'o- registration tax on Alsatian dogs be raised to £2 2s per annuin. The chairman reported that he had o-oue into this matter and he had found that according to the Act it was not permissible to raise the tax more than 10s. If the tax were to be raised the parties concerned would have to take the matter to Parliament. A councillor: These Alsatians arb vicious dogs. ’ . . The chairman: Yes. The trouble is that they should not have been admitted into the country in the first place. Now they, are here we have just to abide by it.
