RELIEF OF UNEMPLOYMENT
GISBORNE AIR PORT SCHEME WITHDRAWAL OF THE SUBSIDY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Aug, 30. Concern has been caused by the announcement that the unemployment subsidy will not be available for the airport scheme commenced some weeks ago in anticipation of the granting of the subsidy. The position now is that 75 men with an aggregate of 350 dependents will have to be dismissed unless the Minister consents to reconsider the position. Until the commencement of the airport work the unemployment situation was acute and, if a suspension is forced now, the acuteness will be re-establish-ed. The Mayor is endeavouring to secure the Minister’s assent to the treatment of the work as a relief job, a strong point in the representation being that every penny expended is for wages.
