NEW LAND FOR SETTLEMENT

Ransom, this evening that rural lands proposed to i be opened for settlement during Sep- I tember and' October were: North Auckland,. 46 holdings, 10,390 acres; Auck- | land, 21 holdings, 3899 acres; Taranaki, . six holdings, 2936 acres; Hawke’s Bay, ; four holdings, 1131 acres; Gisborne, two holdings, 3342 acres; Wellington,; 16 ] holdings, 13,112; Southland, two hold- | ings } 194 acres. .= • ;i ,i ■ Giving ■ details of , estates purchased mnder the Land for Settlements Act, 1925, "Mr. -Ransom said, tfyat altogether 43 estates: had been purchased, comprising .a. .total::area pf-.,f54,G62 ; .acres isujbdivided. iutq -181 holdings,.. The number of settlers placed on (hose lands, .was 17.2, leaving, nine, sections which had . still not been disposed of. Three of the .estates purchased had not yet .been offered for selection, ; Mr. .Ransom said an his opinion it was most satisfactory that of all the settlements offered since the United Government came into office only nine sections remained- unallotted. With regard to the ■ development by the Crown of areas of idle Crown- land under the provisions of last year’s legislation he stated that a large additional area of pumiee land ■ in the Rotorua district was being taken in hand, while work was proceeding vigorously on blocks already being -developed prior to being offered for selection. Inquiries were also being made into the prospects of developing various other blocks which it was hoped to deal with at an, early date.
