LIBERAL-LABOUR AMITY
UNEM PLOYMENT GA MPA I.G N
MR. SNOWDEN FEARS DEFICIT
RIGID ATTITUDE RELAXED
By Telegraph Press Assn. —Copyright. Rec. 8 p.m. London, Aug. 28
The Socialist-Liberal conversations upon unemployment were resumed at Downing Street last night. Mr. David Lloyd George, Liberal leader, Mr. Philip Snowden, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Mr. Arthur Henderson, Foreign Secretary, were included among those present at the conference. The position at the beginning was most difficult as Mr. Snowden intimated that the suggestions of the Liberals were unacceptable to ■the Treasury on financial grounds. Mr. Snowden took the stand that he' was the Treasury’s watch-dog and it was all-important to scrutinise possible expenditure in view of a possible Budget deficit, next year. It is understood that road schemes and agricultural plans were discussed later, the final result being that Mr. Lloyd George and his Liberal associates agreed to continue co-operation with the Labour Government, Mr. Snowden apparently relaxing his rigid attitude. The Prime Minister, Mr. Ramsay MacDonald, is most anxious to have Liberal co-operation throughout the autumn session; The result of the conversations is satisfactory to the Government.
