.DEATH OF MR. HENRY MANKELOW

One of the pioneer settlers of the Inglewood district, Mr, Henry Markelow, died at New Plymouth on Wednesday at .-the ago of 77. lie was born in the parish of Hudlow, Kent, and with his friend, Mr. Arthur Lamb, lie decided to come to New Zealand under the terms then offering of Sir Julius Vogel’s policy of immigration and public works. With a number of others from the County of Kent he sailed from the Thames in 1874 by the ship Waikato, arriving in Wellington in July. He camo on with tho Kentish party to New Plymouth by the Government steamer Luna. A landing from the roadstead was made on July 15. They were quartered in tho old military barracks on Marsland Hill for a few days, and from there the single men of the party were sent to be trained in bush craft on tho site of the present town of Inglewood, under the direction of the lato Mr. Fred Earp and Mr. Robert Hill.

In 1875 and IS7G Mr. Mankelow was attached to Government survey parties, thereby gaining further experience as a bushman and a good knowledge of the Inglewood, Tariki and German Settlement districts. Taking up a bush section on the Dudley and Windsor Roads, he set out to make a home for himself. After marrying in 1880 Miss King, Inglewood, he settled down to the life of farming, meantime earning money to carry out farm improvements by contracting in partnership with tho late Frank .Standing, for bridge building through the bush districts of the MoaStratford country.

When he retired from the farm about I'2 years ago he and Mrs. Mankelow took up, their residence at Fitzroy, and recently celebrated their golden wedding <it their home in Karamu Street.
