Over 700 unemployed waterside workers and sympathisers, including, ; women, attempted to molest volunteer workers on the waterfront. The volunteers were stoned and jeered.. One was thrown into the water, but was rescued. The police charged with batons. They had great difficulty in dispersing the rioters, who spread oyer a large area and kept returning.
