SUPERINTENDENT DEPARTS

; FIRE BRIGADE PRESENTATION. . i.. . . '“ ■ln view of his early departure from Stratford to reside at Hokitika DeputySuperintendent G. W. King of the Stratford Volunteer Fire Brigade was farewelled at tlie station last night by a large gathering of brigade members, their wives and friends. Mr. King has a particularly fine record of 16 year’s service in the brigade and that record was the subject of many complementary remarks, speakers also referring to Mr. King’s personality, which had played an important part in making him so popular with the brigade and townspeople. As a memento of his residence in Stratford Superintendent L, B. Davis presented Mr. King with a suit case and Mrs. King with a mantel clock. ' Items were contributed by Messrs. J. Huddleston, P. Aitken (songs)., M. Peek, V. Henry (pianoforte) and Mrs. IV. Pettigrew (recitation). Mr. Feek played the accompaniments. ' ‘ . - - GENERAL ITEMS. . “We are spending thousands of pounds in Britain saying how good New Zealand - cheese is, and at the same time we producers are . crying its quality down,” said Mr. J. T. Belcher at the annual meeting of the Cardiff Dairy Company. “It seems to -me,” he-added, “that those leading the cry against New Zealand cheese have an axe to grind, and a pretty blunt axe it is. I say a lot of this criticism should' be dropped, and quickly, too.” A number of spectators attended the exhibition of wrestling given on Monday evening at the Stratford gymnasium by the wrestler Ebert, who is to meet. Lundyn in the Stratford. Town Hall on Thursday evening. With. Mr. 11. Shields as" opponent the professional demonstrated a variety of holds and throws that illustrated his wonderful command over his - own muscles and those of the other man .on the mat. It was announced that a similar demonstration. would be given by Lundyn this evening. The opinion was strongly' expressed at the annual meeting of the Cardiff Dairy Company that grading in Britain was the only real test of the quality of dairy produce, particularly from the point of view of the consumer, who was' the man who paid the price. ‘‘How many years ago is it that. Sir Thomas Clements, one of the- best known importers of dairy produce, came to New Zealand and told us our grading system was long out of date!” -remarked one supplier. . .

“The criticisms now -levelled at poor quality standardised cheese are -the same as were previously levelled at a similar quality full cream cheese,”, said Mr. C. A. Marchant, chairman, of the Cardiff Dairy Company, at Monday night's annual meeting. He contended that it was shoddily made poor quality cheese that had given the standardised • article its reputation and that there was little to complain about in carefully manufactured standardised cheese. In support of this he quoted a case of a Hawke’s Bay factory that had made st. ndardis'ed cheese that graded finest all through the-season; but that company, he said, skimmed only la per cent. The- sitting room of the house pwned by the Railway Department and occupied by Mr. S. Tubby, Warwick Road, Stratford, caught fire about 3. a.m.'yesterday. Mr. Tubby was awakened by the noise of the fire and was able to extinguish it before; much'damage was done. ' ' ' ■

The suggestion was; made"",by. a) supplier at the annual meeting of the Cardiff Dairy Company that the time had arrived when the Minister of'Agriculture should be asked to.take' over the control and management of the 'dairy laboratory at Hawera, but." “another speaker-contended that the dairy ihdusi try had in ; the past been seriously rnis- ; led by the Director of the Dairy Divi- '■ sionr It was, he- said, a very " timely i move when the Federation of Dairy Comi panies established its own laboratory. The Dairy Division and the Massey College' between' them had hot contributed any material assistance from' a research point of view, he" said. The motion before the meeting v/as.a recommendation to the directors to discontinue the company’s association with -the , federation and the j laboratory at. Hawera. Despite the fact .that the chairman and other speakers gave specific instances' of, large sayings that \ had accrued to'the company because' of. the scientist’s findings others saw an item for economy in deleting, the sum of. £l3.;a year paid as subscription from their balance-sheet, and. the recommendation was carried on a show of .'hands. '■ , Mr. C. A. Marchant has been re-elect-ed chairman of tlife Cardiff Co-op. Dairy .Company and Mr. D. Shannon deputy--Chairman. In yesterday’s report of the annual meeting of the company the name. of Mr. J. Stewart was inadvertently omitted from those returned by ballot to seats on the directorate.:
