AMATEUR WRESTLERS

BOUTS AT STRATFORD, The following amateurs have been matched to'form the supporting bouts as preliminaries to the professional wrestling -contest, Ebert v. Lundyn, at the Stratford Town Hall ou Thursday evening:— H. Bailey (Hawera) v. D. Tito (Okaiawa).

E. Allenden (Lowgarth) y. H. Harris (Stratford). R. Claridge (Toko) v. J. Martin (Toko). G. Andersen (Toko) v. P. Jones, (Toko). . . Last night Fred Ebert gave demonstrations of-the various holds used oy present day wrestlers. The deadly Boston Crab was demonstrated and it was easy, to realise-how difficult it would be for a wrestler caught in its toils to extricate himself. , • Ebert has ’wrestled his way’ round . the world. He has wrestled in Germany, Austria, Hungary, Yugo Slavia, Belgium, France, Turkey, England, United States,' South America, In-iia, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.' He has taken part in over 600 contests. Ho has won over 400 and drawn 70. He first distinguished himself in the world of sport as a student at the famois’ 'old University of Heidelberg. He had the high honour of representing his native country, Austria, at the ' Olympic Games and winning the ~ light heavy, championship" of the world. Lundyn, Ebert’s opponent for Thursi day night, will give an exhibition at i the football gymnasium to-night. This is another wrestler with a great record. . f The Stratford Wrestling Association is fortunate in obtaining the services of two men. of the calibre of Ebert and Lundyn for its first'contest. Indications are that there will be a capacity house. BIBLE-READING IN HOMES. STRATFORD SOCIETY WORK. . I A meeting of the Stratford branch of the Britisii and Foreign Bible Society was held at the home of the president, Mfs. Polson, on Monday. The Rev. J. MacGregor opened the meeting with prayer. The treasurer, Mrs. Long, read the list of collectors with the amounts collected, the total to date being £36 Ils 6d. As several had. not finished their i collecting it. was expected that the amount °would be further increased. Mrs, Polson presented Mrs. Long with a prize .as she .had collected the most. Bible House has recommended that an effort be made to encourage daily ■ Bible-readincr in the homes by means of ; the daily Bible-reading leaflets, these ! to be given to the subscribers by the collectors." Afternoon tea was served, after which Mrs. MacGregor proposed a'hearty vote of. thanks to Mrs. Polson for her hospitality. The motion was carried' by. acclamation. MODERN CHARIOTEERS. BOYS BUILD GOAT CARTS. Much interest in the goat race at ' the Stratford A. aiid'.p. Association’s show io being manifested by the school child.-, ren of Stratford ami district. Already backyards present scenes of activity, and great care is being lavished upon the. designs and the . building of carts, jt. is in .this direction that youthful ingenuity is given a medium for expression. Old pram? and bicycles are keenly coveted for their wheels, and father’s carefully kept tools are being preseed into service on mother’s discard* l 1-soap-box. . . The school holidays have supplied two weeks during which the would-bf> charioteer can labour undisturbed. • <*.ud-i every advantage is being taken of the > opportunity. The chief problem, of j course, is the motive power. Goats are not plentiful in Central Taranaki. Still, there are enough to meet requirements. It is only a matter of locating them, and it is easy to picture foraging parties of boys bn bicycles roaming the country roads in search of susceptible farmers who will supply the four-foot-ed tractive power for soap-boxes on wheels. ’ • HUIROA NEWS.
