DEATH IN MOTOR SMASH •
ALLEGED NEGLIGENT DRIVING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Aug. 26. 1 Charged with negligent driving and ■ causing death, Robert John Burling, aged 24, a farmer of Piriaka, near Taumarunui, appeared at the Otahuhu Police Court to-day. The charge arose out of an accident near Manurewa on August 2 when Charles Berry Simons was killed. The first witness said he heard defendant say after the accident, “Poor Charlie, ho was my best friend." In a signed statement, winch was produced, defendant said: “My mind was practically a blank after I left Hamilton. My first recollection is seeing iny mate on the road after .the accident.” Burling pleaded- not guilty and was committed for trial. I The magistrate reserved his decision on the charge against .Burling of being intoxicated in charge of a car. . .
