London, Aug. 23. ■Further liquidation of industrial shares and a steady investment demand for gilt-edged securities have been features of the Stock Exchange during the past week. The firmness of gilt-edged securities is not surprising; it is the corollary of bad trade and cheap money and has been fostered by the holiday rest in the new issue market and the shortage of floating stock. This io practically the peak of the holiday season, a circumstance which has-been plainly reflected in the restricted character of dealings. Australian stocks have shared with other gilt-edged securities the steady improvement during the week, and the publication of the Melbourne conference resolutions was only an additional contributing factor to the movement which had already begun in favour of trustee securities, owing chiefly to the depression- in industrials. The Financial News, in its advice to investors who regard the present as an opportune moment to weigh up the chances of the earliest improvement in trade, points out that the recovery wil£ first come from the. countries providing primary materials. It will be speediest in countries not embarrassed by political unrest or involved in national depression. • , In the list of countries which it suggests as likely ultimately to oiler a field for profitable investment, the writer recommends them in the following order: Argentina, Canada, South Africa, Chile, New Zealand, Brazil, France, Sweden, United States, Denmark, Italy and Germany, significantly excluding Australia entirelv.
