Claiming land as British territory was quite an interesting occupation, said Mr. R. G. Simmers, M.Sc., of the recent Mawson Antarctic Expedition, during an address on the work of the expedition given before the Wellington Philosophical Society. The -ceremonial to be followed was laid down by the Foreign Office in England, and it included the formation of a hollow square, the reading of a proclamation, the erection of a Union Jack, the singing of the National Anthem, and finally three cheers. Mr. Simmers showed a lantern slide of the party claiming a small island as a British possession. The only puzzle at the outset had ; been to’ find out how a hollow square was to be formed with only seven men.
