TARANAKI ELIMINATED

dominion boxing titles ROEBUCK, FURZE, GRIFFEN LOSE. HAW ERA MAN ROUSED FROM BED. (By Wire—News Reporter.) Palmerston N., Last Night. The second day of the New championship saw the Taranaki c eliminated. R. Furze bibeaten in the second round of the wei ter and D. Roebuck (New Plymouth) lost the semi-final of the jb we ’8 h • • Griffen (Hawera) was beaten by Bag rie in the middleweight semi-final. In Furze’s and Roebucks fights the verdicts went against the Taranaki men nn the casting vote of the judge after the majority thought the T«ra»«to men had won. In Furze’s ca«e the rowu showed clear disapproval in very decided manner, howling the decision for some time and giving Furze three r ™ SI ”S cheers as he left the ring, followed by further hoots. In Roebuck a case the disapproval was not so pronounced Bruno, his opponent from Ashland, bein" more diminutive and havin„ p up 1 game fight, naturally hpd the sympathy of the crowd, irobably the most surprised man at the decision was the Aucklander’s trainer. In the afternoon Roebuck, 7.->, met E. Adams' (Hamilton), .a clever lad whose, neat evasion the previous, night made many friends. Roebuck in the first round used his long’reach to connect with his straight left, whereas the other boy, showing clever footwork, was content to let Roebuck attack, apparently biding his time. His time never came. In the second' round Adams opened aggressively but Roebuck connected with rights and lefts to the face' and body. Punching more solidly the New Plymouth boy maintained his advantage in the third round to win comfortably. In the evening Roebuck met F. Bruno, 7 5 (Auckland), a smart and aggressive boy who had earlier defeated Higgs, Wellington's . hope. Roebuck again had the advantage of height and reach. At the opening Bruno was very aggressive but Roebuck had no trouble in avoiding his swings and took the fight to him with straight lefts, cleverly duckin" the return sally. A v willing xnix-up at° the close saw Roebuck score in. mfi"htin". Bruno landed to the face just as the gong sounded. The second round was- fought at a fast pace. Roebuck scored with straight clean blows. Bruno, however, kept coming again but Roebuck ducked neatly to evade danger. The round closed with a bout of infighting. , The final round opened, with , a great sally. Roebuck appeared to use his reach to best advantage, his plucky opponent showing the effects but coming baek gamely.' At the close of the round it was thought he would be in the runafter the judges disagreed the referee, Mr. Beban (Greymouth), hoisted Bruno’s ning for the best, loser’s medal, but arm. R. Furze, 19.6, was opposed by D. Cleverly, 10.4 (Auckland), brother of the Olympic champion. Cleverley had the advantage of height and reach over the Tikorangi boxer. Evading Cleverley’s lead Furze forced the pace and shot in a right and left, though not being as straight as usual owing to Cleverley’s long reach proving awkward. Furze had the advantage in the infighting* but near the close of the round Cleyerley landed a left to the face. The second round proved fairly even, though Furze was inclined to swing with both hands. After a spell of infighting the pair mixed it well, Furze appearing to have more sting. The final round saw Cleverley try a short left, but Furze evaded and getting in close forced the pace, scoring to the body and face, Cleverley trying to work the blind side.. Clean fighting at the close saw Furze land two to his opponent’s one. The judges disagreed and the referee gave the verdict to Cleverley, which caused an adverse demonstration.

In order to save having a morning session three extra bouts were added to to-night’s programme. E. Griffen (Hawera), .middleweight,. H.3J, was called out of bed after 11.30 to meet B. Bagrie (Southland), 11.4, in the semifinal. In an, even bout in which there was a lot of close work the Southland representative secured the verdict, eliminating Taranaki’s last hope. Griffen used his left occasionally but seldom used his right.
