POPULAR HOTEL RAIDED
DANCE NIGHT SENSATION. [POLICE TAKE MANY NAMES. The Hotel Australia, in Sydney, was raided by licensing police about 11p.m. on August 14, when the gaiety was at its height, and many names, some of prominent persons, were taken. As a result, charges of contravention of the licensing laws may be laid. There were scenes of consternation when the identity of the police became known, and many unsuccessful attempts at escape were made by the excited dancers. The police chose a dance night to visit the hotel. There were about 200 dancers on the ballroom floor above the public lounge. The orchestra was playing when the police entered. Dancers stood in surprise in the centre of the floor as the police moved quietly about among those seated at tables, taking names.
As soon as the police had taken as many names as possible, they left as quietly as they came, and there was a general exodus from the hotel.
