Meetings have been quite the vogue in this district lately, and no fewer than three were held last week to decide which factory the dairy suppliers would patronise. The majority decided to go to Tarata if the carting could be arranged satisfactorily. Messrs, Askew (chairman), P. Webb (director), W. Smee (manager) and L. Mackay, of the Tarata dairy factory, interviewed the suppliers with reference to this on Friday, and satisfactory arrangements were concluded. The spring sale of dairy and other cattle, held here on Friday by the New Zealand Loan, and Mercantile Company,, was an excellent one, very good prices’ being realised and most of the lines sold. The recent mild weather has had a very good effect on grass. Lambs are to be seen everywhere, and there is apparently a good percentage of twins. The fortnightly euchre party and dance in aid of the hall funds was held on Friday. The ladies' first prize for the euchre was won by Miss M. Larsen after playing-off with Mrs. W. Bertrand, both having won ’eight games. The men’s prize was won by Mr. E. Evans. After a dainty supper had been served, dancing was begun, the musicians being Messrs. Al. Jensen, A. Smellie, W. Bertrand and W. Rawlinson. Mr. W. Rolfe acted as master of ceremonies. Mr. Rex Larsen, Uruti, was the guest of his parents here for the week-end. Miss G. Chapman, who has been the guest of Mrs. W. Fairhurst, Rahotu, has returned home. Mr. IT. Maingay was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. E. McCoard for the weekend. GENERAL ITEMS. The executive of the Stratford A. and P. Association has decided to include a race for goats, driven in carts, on the programme for “people’s day” at the forthcoming show. The Toko team to play Strathmore at Toko at 2 p.m. on Saturday for the Dean Cup is:—Full-back, V. Standing; three-quarters, D. Bonner, A. Walter, P. Griffiths; five-eighths, C. Sangster, E. Walter; half, C. Wilmshurst; rover, G. Cuff; back row, T. Smith, 0. Fetch; sides,’ H. Were, J. Corbett; lock, J. Johnston; hookers, A.. Sangster and J. Jones. Emergencies, P. Mischeski, W. and L. Lash. The executive was fully cognisant of the necessity for increasing the floor’ space for the next show, said the president, Mr. A. J. Davey, at a meeting o'f the general committee of the Stratford Winter ’Show Association last night. The only solution was to build, and the committee was considering ways and means for raising the necessary finance. He anticipated that in about two months’ time the committee would have something definite to pul before members.

KING’S THEATRE, STRATFORD.

' “MADAME X” FEATURE. In “Madame X,” starring Ruth Chatterton, Lewis Stone is seen as “Floriot,” the stern husband, whose treatment of his erring wife drives her forth on her weary and anguished journey to the ends of the world. As the stern logician and clumsy lover he gives a splendidly restrained performance, while his talking voice, trained by long years on the stage, leave nothing to be desired. Miss Chatterton makes her role one of the emotional triumphs of her career. The vivid scene in the courtroom, where she faces her husband and the son who never learns her identity, is one of the most gripping episodes ever seen on the screen. Raymond Hackett is ideally cast as the son,' as is also Ullric Haupt, who is the murder victim. Eugenie Besserer as the nurse, and Mitchell Lewis as the villainous Canby, do splendid work. Barrymore’s direction shows the same finesse and dramatic perception which marked his work in - “Confession,” his recent talking dramatic sketch.. An interesting bit of character work is done by Claude King, famous British stage actor.

ELTHAM THEATRE. Excitement, fast action, suspense — these are the thrilling elements’ which provide superb entertainment for those who see the latest gripping mystery drama, ‘’The Mysterious Dr. Fu Manchu,” which screens at the above theatre to-night. The story is a particularly thrilling Oriental mystery melodrama, and is woven around the ability of a man to weave the hypnotic spell. Scenes at the opening depict the defence of the British Legation in Pekin against the rebelling boxers. The action scenes are remarkable. With this background, the story follows the vengeful career of the fanatical Dr; Manchu, his wily machinations which bring a beautiful girl into his clutches and his attempts to force her. to work his -will against liis enemies, but it differs from many mystery stories in that there is no uncertainty about who commits the crimes. The audience knows that Dr. Fu Manchu is the killer. The questions are how does he do his killing without leaving clues.T;';,. 1
