England won the eight-oared rowing championship at the Empire Games at Hamilton. New Zealand was - second three-quarters of a length away and Canada was third five lengths away. Bob Bearce (Australia) won the special quarter-mil© dash from a field of five. The rowers included Joe Wright, Canadian singles champion and former - Diamond Sculls winner. Pearce and Wright shot into the. lead, the-Australian at the half-way mark. Then .Pearce’s- long, powerful strokes carried him on even terms with Wright. Fifty-yards from the finish Wright’s shell nearly .collided with Pearce’sHe stopped pulling and Pearce showed clear to win by several yards. -

The Laehine Rowing Club (Montreal) defeated Hamilton Leander in the 1401 b eight-oared race by inches. Whelpton, of the Leander Club, won the international 1401 b single sculls. Bile and Richards (Canada) won the double sculls. . On Tuesday night Joyce Cooper (England) .won the women’s 9 yards freestyle swimming, creating new Canadian record of 67 seconds. Ellen King (Scotland) was second and Valerie Davies (Wales), third. In the women’s springboard diving O. Whitesett' (South Africa) was first, Doris Ogilvie (Canada) second and Molly Bailey (Canada), third. Canada won . the men’.s 800 yards relay. England was second. Ryan (Australia) swam marvellously to win the 1500 yards free-style. Bridson (New Zealand) was second and Burleigh (Canada) third. In the Empire bowling singles, Fielding (New Zealand) defeated Reid (Canadian champion) by 21 to 20 in a stirring 28 heads struggle. Reid was within a point of winning after leading throughout, but was unable to count the necessary shot win. Fielding trailed with 16 when the Canadian had. 20, and then counted two and a pair of singles to the score. On the deciding head the New Zealander placed a draw six inches from kitty at his third attempt, and Reid’s runner was a clean miss. In the rinks England defeated Scotland by 19 to 16, and Canada defeated South Africa by 29 to 14. Ethel Catherwood won the running high jump and also the javelin throw.
