One Good One.
Rangiata, the dam of the Great Northern and Grand National Steeplechases them and Grand National Steeplechase winner Aurora Borealis, has only produced the one horse of any class. Rangiata was bred by Mr. D. Buick in 1915, and is a brown mare by California or Aberbrothock from Elusion, by Van-guard-Eclat, by Natator-Fame, by The Painter-Maid of the Mist, by AntidoteBarbary (imp.), by Simoom. Aurora Borealis is a first foal (1924), and after a year's spell Rangiata was put to Gasbag, the result being a colt (dead). Next year she produced Gasrange to the same sire. Then, after missing to Acre, she produced a filly to Gasbag, and last season she was put to Hunting. Song. Both California and Aberbrothock were good class racehorses, but neither left stock of much account. On the other hand, Day Comet, the sire of Aurora Borealis, has left some goed ones, mostly stoutly built and capable of doing best on holding tracks. Last season Day Carnet finished second on the list of winning sires with 50 wins, 138 placings, and stakes amounting to £17,273. The St. Frusquin horse is now the property of Sir Charles Clifford, and although foaled away back in 1910, may still have some years of usefulness before him. The Stonyhurst Stud’s success has declined in recent years, and Day Comet may reinstate it to its once very high position.
Many trainers are superstitious, and the writer knows one who cannot bear to see any of his horses photographed. The other day an owner and his family went up to a Rangitikei training track to see the horses working, and while the business of aaddling-up was being attended to a young lady “snapped” two well-known jumpers. ‘’That’s torn it!” muttered the trainer, and, strange to say, both horses met with accidents a few minutes after.' Cameras- ire nbw “barred” in that stable. ' < '“ ‘‘
