UPS AND DOWNS OF RACING

WINNING TOTALS COMPARED. < ;A comparison of the racing statistics .for the-past two seasons shows that, [while a few horses are consistent stakeearners, the vast majority ‘‘live for a year, or live for a day,” and the topmost positions on the New Zealand tables of winners are constantly changing. Many of our best horses have been eent after the bigger stakes offering in Australia, and while missing from their home records, are doing just as well (if not better) across the Tasman. In the 1928-29 season a phenomenal two-year-old, Gay Ballerina, topped thescore with £3,950, while in the recently concluded racing year the crack three-year-old, Hunting Cry, starred with the fine total of £4,985. Gay Ballerina was sold to an Australian, and has done equally well in the Commonwealth, and Siow Hunting Cry is off to try his fortune there. Nightmarch, who was third with £3,590 in the previous year’s Hat here, did practically the whole of his racing in Sydney and in Melbourne during the past season, and his winnings there made New Zealand stakes Jook very small fish. Of th® twenty-six horses which won ipver £2,000 or over in New Zealand in .11028-29 Prodice has dropped from £3,750 to £2,027 during the recently concluded season, going down from second to nineteenth position. Laughing Prince, who was fourth with £3,585, has fallen right away to a mere £775, (Pegaway, true to her name, follows up £2,915 [with a useful £2,300, and Paganelli, whose Sydney trip proved a failure, has declined from £2,900 to £1,720. [Royal Saxon goes down from £2,871 to £1,415, and Corinax from £2,855 to £2,080. Red Heckle, Rapier and Star Arch have dropped out of the picture, Ibui Bright Glow adds £2,255 to her [tally of £2,560 the previous season. Toxeuma remains about the same. In 192829 he was in 13th. place with £2,510, .while last year £2,405 earned him Sth. | position. Supremacy and Aussie have dropped out of the list of housed which

paid for themselves last year. The veteran Desert Glow has slumped from £2,282 to £540. Silver Paper lias done likewise, but Concentrate, who was ©ext on the 1928-29 roll, has made marked progress, rising from 18th. with £2,175 to third with £3,87'5. Mister Gamp has raced disappointingly, and flo has Vertigern. Kawini is beaten bv old age, and should be retired. Honour, •who gained more honour in New South Wales during the past two seasons than he ; ,did in New Zealand, lias gone down from £2,140 to £1,210, and the plodder

Seatown has not had as good a season as usual, his tally declining from £2,115 •to £1,090, Pink NolC'-and Flying Juliet

have said farewell to the track, and Yoma is now almost hopeless as a racing proposition. On the up-grade last season was Eaglet, who won £3,940 against £1,605 in 1928-29. Historic advanced from £1,530 to £3,246; Cimabue from £1,665 to £2,360; <hid Maori Boy from £692 to £2,310. Star Stranger comes into the limelight once more with £2,175, and In the Shade has earned £2,075. The two-year-old Cylinder won £2,055, mostly in the autumn, and looks like beating that score this year. Pompeius has drawn up to £1,930, and the surprising White Fang returned from Australia to collect £1,980.' Mudlark Taboo won only £4 less, and True Blood took £1,86'5. Other good winners were Vali £1,825, Eager Rose £l,BlO, and Rabbi £1,7'65. “PARITUTU.”
