GIRL REFUSES TO TAKE OATH
AVERSION TO HYPROCRISY. AUCKLAND INQUEST DELAYED. (By Wire—Special to News.) . Auckland, Aug. 19. An inquest at Otahuhu' thjs morning before Mr. F. 11. Levien, S.-M7, was temporarily delayed when a girl witness, Rita Linda Howie,‘ aged 13 years, refused to take an oath on’the Bible. When she was called into the witnessbox . and was handed the Bible by the Court orderly she refused to take it in her hand, brushing it on one side. De-tective-Sergeant Bickerdike tried to persuade her to take oath but she . flatly refused. In reply to the coroner the girl stated that her rea.son was that too many people pretended to ’ believe in the Bible but did not. The girl promised to tell the whole truth and the inquest proceeded.
