KAPUNI BRIDGE REPAIRS. GOOD PROGRESS OF THE WORK. The monthly meeting of the Eltham County Council on Saturday was attended by Messrs. A. L. Campbell (chairman), E. J. Gifford, C. E. McGuinness, W. E. Carter, J. L. Campbell, M. W. Barker, A. V. Mcssana and R. J. Knuekey. The chairman in reporting on the appointment of heavy traffic fees among members of the Taranaki Local Bodies’ Association stated that while the Eltham County Council's recommendations had not been adopted an additional proportion had been allotted to certain other councils.' - Eltham's share, however, remained the -same.

The engineer’s report stated further bitumen patching had been done in the south riding. Depressions had been filled in. Mountain Road. On Boylan Road water-tabling was done and the formation widened on-two corners.

■ In the Mangatoki riding good progress was being made with the raising and .repairing of the Kapuni bridge: -The structure had been raised and the concreting of the piers was being done. The metal on the approaches had been removed and most 'of the formation filled to the required height. That could not be completed until the concrete set. It was expected to have the bridge opened on Thursday. Bitumen patching and water-tabling had been done on Elthani Road.

'During the month.metal patching and general surface work was attended to on Rawhitiroa and Mataiwhetu rbads, Eltham riding. Slips had been cleared off the Materaaroke Road. One sharp bend was being widened on the Patea hill. The surfacemen at Omona were engaged in crushing shell rock to be used for maintenance purposes on the Ompna hills.

In the Kaponga riding water-tables and culverts had been attended to on Manaia, Eltham, Rowan and Mangawhero roads. Metal patching had been done on Palmer Hoad. Drains had been cleaned on the Auroa Road.

In the Elthani riding'slips had been cleared off Mangimingi ridge and the Rotokare Road. Metal patching and water-tabling had been done on the Rawhitiroa, Maata and Horoi roads. > A start had been made to complete the fencing on the Rawhitiroa deviation. Mr. Messana congratulated the engineer and staff' on their splendid efforts to complete the Kapuni bridge repairs as soon as possible. They had bad adverse weather. Mr. Campbell considered a really good job was being made of the bridge, which had been raised four feet. The steel was in a good state, of preservation but the decking timber was rotten.

' The. council was advised that its new roller woukl arrive in cases lington and would 1 railed to Eltham, where it would' be assembled. The Local Government Loans Board advised that the council’s application for a v loan of £l4OO for workers’ ■ dwellings be investigated. L . The Transport . Department advised that samples, of road safety signs had been received from Canada. These were of heavy guage • metal- and conformed with the regulations. ' ? ; ■ A letter .was received .from the district highways council regarding the purchase of bitumen.. The Highways Board : regretted that it was unable to make purchases of bitumen on behalf of local -If was considered that such, pqr,chases by fhe board for work being carried oiit by local bodies would be open t.o strong objection. The board thought that if quotations were invited by. the - four centres the local bodies •should be able to obtain the same prices as the board .would. ■

Mr. R. Gooding was formally appointed sanitary inspector to the Elthani Countv Council.

BIRD ROAD EUCHRE PARTIES.

POINTS PRIZES FOR SEASON.

As the final of a scries held during the season the euchre party-dance in the Bird Road school, on Friday night attracted a record attendance. Fifteen and a-half tables ■were . engaged in cards, prizes being won by Mrs. T. Waite, senr., 1, Mrs. J. Parish 2; Mr. 7’. Nolly 1; Air. J. Goldsmith 2. . Keen competition has existed over the season for the points prizes and so close were - the leaders that the position was clarified only after that evening’s games were concluded. The ladies’ points prize, donated by the school committee, was won by Mrs. W. Parish, with Miss N. Morris runner-up. Mrs. R. Death donated the men’s prize,, which was. won by Mr. J. Parrish, junr., the runner-up being Mr. T. Death. Following supper, which was supplied by a committee of ladies, the floor was cleared for dancing, Mr. R. Goodwin attending to the ceremonies. Air. H. X\aite played’the, music. ; ELTHAM BAND CONCERT. UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF FUNDS. An enjoyable musical programme was given by the Eltham Brass Band assisted by local artists on Friday evening The net proceeds will be subsidised and used for unemployment relief. The programme comprised pianoforte solos by Master Ilavden Murrav, songs by Mr; 11. Lambic', Mrs. J. A. Rankin, Miss Melirtens and Mr. F. Silver, Spanish and Eastern dances by Miss Peggy Wylds and pupils, elocutionary items by Miss V. Davis, ’cello solos by Miss AL Saunders and selections by the band. MAKAHU NEWS. The fourth of a series of euchre parties was held on Thursday night when the Makahu schoolroom was again well filled. .The winners of the ladies’ prizes were Airs. F. Gatton (first), and Airs. 6. Frank (second). Air. A. Kopke won the men’s first prize and Air. G. Bellamy the second. After euchre, supper was served and dancing commenced. Pastures which have been handicapped by the severe frosts are beginning t.> look green, and, favwuned with fair weather, should make rapid growth. .
