LADIES' HOCKEY MATCH
SOUTH DEFEAT NORTH TARANAKI REPRESENTATIVES. WANGANUI GAME NEXT WEEK. A trial match was played at Eltham on Saturday to select Taranaki representatives to play Wanganui at Wanganui next Saturday. The following ladies were chosen by Mr. 11. C. Johnson, the selector: — Goal: N. -Shannon (Ramblers). Full-backs: R. Townsend (Eltham), Mrs. Trass (Inglewood). Halves: B. Walker (Eltham), K, Lilley (Stratford High School), A. Conaglen (Pihama). Forwards: M. Young (Stratford High School)','N. Hunt (Inglewood), ,B. Watkins ' (Inglewood), P. Wylds (Eltham, J. Forsyth (Pihama), Emergencies: Backs, N. Julian (Otakelio); forward, B. Stevens (Rovers). The teams were: —
North: L. Collingwood, E. Walker, B. Watkins, N. Hunt, M. Young, R. Kleeniah, K. Lilley, E. Dobson, Mrs. Trass, M. Ferguson, B. Burkhart. South: N. Gopperth, P. Wylds, B. Stevens, J. Forsyth, L. Potts, K. Quinn, B. Walker, A. Conaglen, N. Julian, R, Townsend, N. Shannon. ■ For the first few minutes play was of an even nature up and down-field, neither side haying any circle shots. Following a corner North carried play into the circle, N. Hunt shooting a neat goal. Following a corner against. South P. Wylds broke away up-field assisted by J. Forsyth, and off a corner P. Wylds secured and notched South's first goal. P. Wylds tried to goal once more, but Mrs. Trass saved. Following play in North's territory Miss Hunt led a good drive almost to the circle. South was hard-pushed and a corner resulted. South remained in difficulties until R. Townsend put a back-line shot. N. a. run but went only to half-way, North retaliating with a drive to the circle, where E. Walker tried a shot unsuccessfully. B. Watkins netted immediately afterwards. Once more North went to the. circle, L. Collingwood trying to nef, but without result. Au attack was carried up-field by South, J. Forsyth netting. At half-time the score was two-all.
Following a hot attack to the circle, B. Stevens netted from a scramble. The score was immediately levelled once more with a goal by L. Collingwood, after a vigorous drive which the defenders were unable to resist. An unsuccessful shot was made by B. Stevens, the ball just missing the net. P. Wylds made an opening for B. Stevens to shoot, but B. Burkhart saved well. Several good drives were made by each side, play fluctuating without advantage to either .until from a corner J. Forsyth centred to enable B, Stevens to score again. P. Wylds from a straight run shot another goal. South had difficulty in repelling attacks, but finally N. Shannon made a good save when B, Watkins endeavoured to net and a rush to North’s, circle vzas initiated. North resisted successfully and responded with a drive to the circle. Luck favoured South in warding off the shot. Play was transferred to North’s- circle, where B. Stevens netted from a. scramble. North again had to make a couple of shots from the corner, and the game ended at: South ' .... 6 North 3 Mr. R. Evitts refereed.
