FARMERS’ TOPICS DISCUSSED

POOR VISIBILITY ON ROADS. PRICE OF OATS IN TARANAKI. The monthly meeting of the South Taranaki executive of the Farmers’ Union was held at Hawera yesterday. Mr, E. J. Betts presided over an attendance of 13 delegates. It was decided to support the acclimatisation societies’ efforts to have the protection removed from stoats and weasels. , It was decided to forward to the local bodies concerned the following list of bends and corners with poor visibility: Skeat Road, Ball Road-Main Road junction, Auroa (near railway station), Ohangai. Road-Whakamara Road junction, Waihi Road-Glover Road jinction, Turutuni Road-Glover Road

junction, Waihi Road-South Road junction. The trouble in most cases is due to boxthorn hedges, but in the last two cases there are large signs. Mr. J. Cocker suggested that recip-rocity-could be arranged between New Zealand and . Canada for the exchange of butte?’.and timber. . Air. Cocker also advocated 'the removdl of duties on Cereals used-for -the-feeding" bf pigs. The Presbyterian Women’s Training Institute forwarded details of-its teaching system in Duifediri schools and 'asked for sympathetic assistance. The enclosed , syllabus was handed to Air. Cocker for a report. The Southland provincial secretary wrote asking for details of wharfage rates on oat to Wanganui, Patea. New Plymouth .and Waitara. He was making comprehensive inquiries as growers in Southland only got a low price for oats, while' he was informed that in the North Island, Taranaki particularly. the consumer paid an exorbitant price, which made it appear that the transport and distributing charges were the cause.

The - secretary (Mr. E. K. Cameron) reported that he had supplied the inkformation. : i Air. Cocker moved that the attention of the' Dominion executive be drawn to the fact that cattle interests had no representation .ion the Aleat Producers’ Board? On the-face of it it was grossly unfair, he said. The motion was carried.

The president reported upon the conference of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, the Sheep-owners’ Federation, the Employers’ Federation and the Counties’ Association to discuss the new taxation.

The amount to the credit of the appropriation accoun’ will provide for a further payment' to suppliers, but until the balance’of the'cheese unsold is disposed of and the account sales are to hand it will not be possible to state what amount will be available for distribution. Three directors, Messrs R. S. Scown, H. Cornwall and A. F. Wills, retire by rotation. Alessrs Scown and Cornwall offer themselves for re-elec-tion, but Air.
