NON-PASTEURISATION PAYS

MELROSE COMPANY’S EXPERIENCE ABUSE OF LEGALISED SKIMMING. That cheese most suitable to the trade can be made from unpasteurfeed standard wed milk has proved the experience of the Melrose Dairy Company. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet (already published) at the 18th annual : meeting of ' shareholders yesterday, • the chairman of directors, Mr. G. W. . Williams; stated • that in-, dications were that it was not reasonable standardising that had caused trouble, but the abuse of legalised skimming and the implied expectation ,-that the Home consumer Would pay for water up to 42 per cent. The company had received reports on its cheese as it reached the consumer, and both its agents had reported the product as oeing of good firm body, close cutting, fat and meaty. ■ .: ■ They ", had instructed their manager to make the best cheese, and,- as the result of suppliers bringing a good qua!-, ity of. milk, he was able to make one of the best parcels of cheese graded at Patea last season, with no second grade at all. -

The directors considered the position disclosed, very satisfactory, continued Mr. Williams, and he congratulated- the. shareholders upon. having such successful'year. There had been a slight increase in the amount of milk supplied, which, if it continued, would reduce the charges per lb. of butter-fat. It was very encouraging to know ithat sodium chlorate would kill ragwort, and if it proved successful there seemed no doubt that the factory would benefit, as there was a lot of land that had been forced to run sheep through the pest. The directors had arranged for supplies of sodium chlorate to be indented. so that suppliers could obtain it from the factory at cost. Cheese had been consigned till the end of December, and they had been fortunate to secure what had turned out to be a good sale for the balance of the season.. The price was . less 1 per cent., 60 tons being sold at that figure. Owing to a good yield of milk in the autumn production had exceeded the quantity sold. The excess had been sent Home,, and had been. taken in at 755.

They had been able to pay out Is 5d plus .28d per lb. interest over the first half of the season, and Is 7d plus interest on the second half. Sufficient depreciation had been allowed and repairs and renewals attended to. Mr. Williams concluded with an expression of thanks to the secretary (Mr. A. K. Fyson), staff, suppliers and Press. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The report of the auditors, Messrs. Tristram and Lennon, was read to the meeting. The auditors were re-appoint-ed. The retirina directors, Alessrs. W. Dunlop, G. Wallace and G. W. Williams, were re-elected unopposed. The chairman’s honorarium was increased by £5 sb.
