HAWERA SCOTS SOCIAL

PATEA PROVIDES PROGRAMME. ENJOYABLE EVENING SPENT. A most enjoyable concert programme, arranged by the Patea and district Scottish Society, was the main feature of the Hawera Scottish Society’s monthly social, held in St. Mary’s Hall. Hawera, on Wednesday evening. The audience, numbering over 250, showed very definite appreciation of the efforts of the performers, according to each rounds .of well-merited .applause and insistent requests for encore numbers, which were kindly given. ; '- Mr; J. E. Campbell, chief of the Hawera Scottish gocietyj who presided, expressed thanks to the performers and io the Patea Society. Associated with Mr. Campbell on the stage were Mr. J. Kettles, chief of the Patea Society, and Mr. D. McCormick, chieftain of the Hawera body. ■ Included in the audience were visitors from all over Taranaki and from various other parts of New Zealand. to whom Mr.* Campbell extended a warm welcome. :

The hall had been attractively decorated, under the supervision of Mrs. H. J. Webber, with streamers of red, yellow arid black forming a canopy over the, heads of the audience, greenery and Scottish flags, presenting altogether a cosy appearance. Excellent arrangements for supper, served at the conclusion of the. programme, were in charge of Miss Ballantine.. The efforts of a willing band of helpers considerably lightened the responsibilities of those in charge of the arrangements and of the executive, of which Mr. E. Kirkby is secretary.

After eupper dancing was carried on to music' supplied by Mr. T. Pickering’s orchestra, Piper lari Campbell accompanying for an eighteome reel. The programme comprised songs by Misses Hainerton, Beer and Sutherland, Mesdames Hamel and McDonald. Messrs. Nasmith and Hook, and Master S. Pauling; vocal duets, by Misses A. Kettles and, C. Reid and Air. and Mrs. Hook; choral numbers, by the Patea Scottish Society’s choir; recitations, by, Mrs., Head and Master L. Pauling; pipe selection, by Piper J. Clarkson; sketch, “The Uninvited Guest,” by Mrs. Illingworth. Misses H. Sutherland. H- Forbes andA. Kettles, and Air, G. Kettles. Miss Sutherland played the accompaniments.

WOMEN'S DIVISION’S. WORK. DRINKING AT DANCES CONDEMNED The monthly meeting of the South Taranaki executive of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held yesterday, Mrs. W. E. Carter presiding. Also present were Mesdames Wilson, W. T. Seed, Findlay, F. Mills, H. Thrush, E. Oliver, Cocker, E. Meuli, G. Good, Allan and G. R. Vickridge and Miss Johnson. Concern was expressed at drinking at dances, and the hope expressed that drastic steps would be taken for its suppression. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs. Larcom and Mrs. Roberts in the death of their mother. A resolution objecting to daylight saving was carried. Two letters of thanks were received for helping with clothes given to families. It was reported that the division was working with the Government in immigration matters, .Mrs. Carter being the Dominion correspondent for the “big sister” movement of the Overseas Club. Mr. L. O. Hooker wrote suggesting the postponement of “Hospital Day” until the end of September. It was decided to leave the date to Mr. Hooker. The Okaiawa branch wrote thanking the Hawera branch for a donation of £l. The Hawera Hospital Board wrote thanking the division for the donation of a chair for a convalescents’ room.
