CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
MEETING IN Nl:\V I’LYMOI. Tl I. The Taranaki Chamber of Commerce met in New Plymouth last night. Present: Messrs Eric Sbaw (in the chair), J. McLeod, C. H. Weston, W. J. Penn, Gordon Fraser, W. D. Armit, 11. J. Larkin. J.' R. McGregor and J. McNeill. The Department of Agriculture wrote stating that after going fully into the matter it had decided that the expense involved in stationing a fruit inspector at New Plymouth was too great, especially as it was clear that there would be insufficient work to keep an officer fully employed, while it was not considered practicable to detail an officer already stationed in New Plymouth to undertake the special work. The matter was held over.
The Auckland Chamber wrote protesting against the gliding scale of wheat, and flour duties and asked for the views of the Taranaki Chamber. The Taranaki Chamber decided to reply that it would support any action taken by the Auckland Chamber in protesting against the duties. “The embargo i<? a scandal,” said Mr. Gordon Fraser. “The obstruction is 80 per cent, on the invoice volue pf wheat in Sydney.” The Hamilton Law Society, said Mr. Weston, had set a movement on foot to take away from the Taranaki judicial district part of the Ohura County. The Taranaki Law Society had written pointing out that owing to the community of interest between Taranaki and Ohura any such change would be unfortunate.
Mr. McLeod i-uid there was not the slighest doubt that the community of interest lay between Ohura and Taranaki, not Ohura and Hamilton. Mr. Armit pointed out that the Ohura land and mortgage deeds were held in the New Plymouth department. The chamber decided to write to the Taranaki Law Society approving of its action in protesting against the attempt to detach the Ohura district from Taranaki.
