CLEARING POSTAL BOXES
. EXTENSION OF TIME DESIRED ■•] do not suppose one person out of ten in New Plymouth knows that the street postal boxes are cleared at 10 p.m.,” fitiid Air. J. McNeill, when the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce was considering a letter from the chief postmaster last evening. The chief postmaster at New Plymouth, Mr. F. E. Beamish, wrote that in reply to the. chamber’s request that the'night clearance of street receiving boxes be made at II p.m. instead of 10 p.m. he had to state that the recent change from 4 a.m. io 10 p.m. was made to meet staff conditions and he regretted he could not again be altered as suggested without inflicting hardship on the staff and involving the payment'of overtime. He regretted to learn that the altered time did not suit all business men but would mention that the last clearance of receiving’ boxes was made at 10 p.m. in the metropolitan areas of Auckland.. Wellington, C'hristehnrch and Dunedin, and it appeared no request had been made for an extension beyond that time. He pointed out that the 10 p.m. clearance did not preclude correspondence from catching the early morning despatches ae the final clearance for these mails was made at 7.45 a.m. at the Chief Post Office. *‘lf the boxes were cleared at six. in the morning it would suit us,” said Mr. Gordon Fraser. I Mr. J. McLeod said be understood the arsangeinents mentioned by the postmaster depended on the night train. Now, perhaps, they could be altered. The president and vice-president were, delegated to interview the . postmaster to see if the boxes could-' be cleared some time in the early morning instead of at night.
