DEATH OF MR. C. T. RUNDLE

MEMBER OF PIONEER FAMILY. EARLY DAYS IN THE PROVINCE. A member of one of the noted pioneer families in North Taranaki, Mr. Charles Thomas Rundle died at the age of 82 in New Plymouth yesterday morning. Mr. Rundle’s parents came to Taranaki in the Amelia Thompson in September, 1841, and Sir. Rundle; himself was born at Barrett’s farm,: Moturoa, near the Hongi Hongi lagoon. His father, .Mr. Richard Rundle,;carried on a whaling station with the famous Richard Barrett. Mr. Rundle spent his childhood on the Barrett Road on a farm near Lake Rotokare. In the early fifties the family moved to Bell Block. Until the outbreak of the Maori Wai’ in 1860, ha lived on the farm. The remainder ol his life was spent in New Plymouth where he was for many years in partnership with Mr. J. S. S. Medley. In his youth Mr. Rundle was one of the leading athletes in North Taranaki, and he was a jumper of no mean ability as ■well as a footballer. ' . Besides Mr. Richard Rundle’s association with Barrett in the whaling business, be, in conjunction with the late Mr. Samuel Oliver, built and opened the first flour mill in the district. He was one of the best known bridge builders and contractors on the west coast. The late Mr. C. T. .Rundle for several years was a director of the New Plymouth Investment and Loan Society until ill-health necessitated his retirement. He was one of the oldest members of the New Plymouth Bowling Club and retained a keen interest in the game. Mr. Rundle was one of a family .of sever sons and five daughters. His-wife, a daughter of the late Mr. Theophilus White, died a few years ago. He is survived by the following sons and daughters: Messrs. C. F. Rundle (Johannesburg. South Africa), T. V. Rundle (Sydney), Mesdames Christenson (Kimbolton), T. B. Kay (Auckland) and M. Strombom (New Plymouth) and Mis® E. 11. Rundle (New Plymouth). There are several grandchildren.
