NEW PLYMOUTH GOLF BALL

CLEVER DECORATION SCHEME.

FUNCTION A GREAT SUCCESS. ■. j .Soft shades, panelled and mirrored walls and a stage delightfully arranged were .rhe striking features pf the deeqvative scheme. So . successfully,. carried put for the annual ball of, the. New Plymouth :Golf . Club held last evening - jii the Workers’ ■ Social Hall. Visitors from all parts of Taranaki and a sprinkling, from other provinces took the. floor to dance, to the music of Renton’s, dance band, and from every point . of.. view the function was a success. Without one having actually been within the hall it would be difficult to. conceive the beauty of the interior. The rather hard appearance usually presented was utterly transformed into a variety of soft shades of mauve, pink and gold with relieving shades of black, while across the room hung swaying streamers of green with white pompoms dangling from the ends. That was the first impression. Then the artistically arranged stage caught and held the eye. Round the walls rose panels arranged in pairs and at intervals, the first being of black and gold, the next of pink and black and so on round the entire room. Immediately in front of these were placed bowls of tall hollyhocks in toning shades of pink, mauve and gold. Large mirrors, deftly placed, caught reflections of the streamers, of beautiful J dresses and gay, laughing faces. On the face of the gallery scalloped fronds circled in soft tones while baskets of asparagus fern hung below. The pillars were draped .in blending colours and bowls of blooming wattle, helped by Japanese lanterns, relieved the sombre wall at the end. The lights above were delicately covered in mauve, pink and gold and threw a harmonising light' on the couples. i The bright green streamers were representative of the fairway and the dancing white pom-poms of the golf balls. The plan was very cleverly executed. Oriental arches rose in the background of the stage, and from between marble pillars multi-coloured balloons were continually wafted into the air, a well-concealed electric fan driving a current of air from beneath them. A large mirror and bowls of wattle were other features. The upstairs seating gallery was graced with fronds of pungas, the whole blending into what might be called a delightful page from Alice in Wonderland.

The supper tables completed the decorative scheme, bowls of autumn-tinted Iceland poppies .with maidenhair fern and wattle rising above the plates of dainties.

The decorations were handled by a committee in charge of Mrs. P. E. Stainton, the committee being indebted to Mr. find Mrs. James Scanlon for the stage settings. Supper arrangements were in the hands of Mesdames A. L. Humphries and T. Wilson. The success was due in large part to the work of tho energetic secretaries, Messi's. C. H. Stephenson and K. Eookes. During the evening a bouquet of , wattle, jonquils and Iceland poppies was to Mrs. E. A.- Walker, wife of the president, by Airs. R. H.
