BASKETBALL AND FOOTBALL. COMPETITIONS AT PATEA. A large ami representative throng of school children,, teachers, parents and friends assembled at the Patea Domain yesterday, when the annual seven-a-sidc football and basketball competitions under the auspices of the Patea and District Public Schools’ Amateur Athletic Association were held. The schools represented at the gathering were Patea, Patea Convent, Waverley, Waverley Convent, Whenuakura, Kakaramea, Hur-. - leyville and Alton, over 100 children taking part in the day’s sports. The president, Air. F. S. Tarrant (Kakaramea) and the secretary, Mr. J. Withers (Whenuakura) had a strenuous time carrying through the arrangements successfully, with the assistance of a willing, band of teachers and other helpers. The weather was fair during most of the day, heavy rain in. the afternoon marring the final games. At the conclusion of the games Mr. Tarrant congratulated all the participants, particularly tho members of the winning teams, and thanked all who had assisted to make the gathering a success. . Air. F. Ramsbottom, Alayor of Patea, also voiced his congratulations and presented trophies and medals to the captains of the winning, teams. The senior football competition for the Duffy Shield, held last year by Waverley, was won by the Patea team, which was as follows: —S. Balsillie (captain), N. Alar tin, C. Buckland, J. Fairweather, J. Geary, V. and C. Gordon. The junior football competition for a handsome cup was won by Harleyville, the team being M., G., C. and Dermott Hurley, A. Busing, N.‘ Scown and J. Couchman.

In the basketball competition for a handsome rosebowl, the Waverley B and Whenuakura teams played for fialf-an-hour without score, and it was decided that each team should hold the bowl for six months. The members of each winning football and basketball team received medals. The football referees were Messrs. L. Hunt, F. S. McKenna, R. Rutherford and D. The committee responsible for the function hopes to receive a full, measure of support from town' and country patrons. Good prizes are being awarded, for a number of different sections. Alesdamcs Goldsmith and Fitzgerald and Air. Renal, all of Eltham, have kindly consented to act as judges. - The firm of R. P. Morrissey and Co. advertises particulars of the usual marir sales at the Union Street salerooms, Hawera, to-day at 11 a.m. and 1.15 p.m. An old-time dance will be held in the Otakehe Hall on Friday, August 15, at which the Otakeho and District Farmers’ Association' will present the prizes won in the fields and cattle competitions.
