BACHELORS’ AND SPINSTERS’.BALL
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The bachelors’ and spinsters’ ball in the Ratapiko hall last week proved a most enjoyable function. 1 Owing to the boisterous weather the attendance was not as large as was expected. Nevertheless those who did attend entered' into the fun, and the ball was also'a success financially. This committee of young people who have taken up the social life of the district is to be congratulated on its management. Several competitions were enthusiastically contested, and the following couples proved victorious: Spot waltz, Mrs. W. Willang and Mr. F. Hill; balloon dance, Mrs. Court and partner; ■ Monte Carlo, Miss Ellen Klenner and Mr. Jim Moratti; guessinrr competition, Mr. A. Gannaway. Mr. Ganna way donated hie prize to the committee. Another competition was won by Mr. Frank Lawrence, Tariki. McNeill’s orchestra supplied delightful music and the ladies’ committee provid'.an excellent supper. The Ratapiko Sports Club held a euchre party oh Thursday night in aid of the hall funds apd the accounts for th evening showed a good profit. Miss Ethel Klenner eecured the ladies’ first prize and Miss M. Burkett the second prize. The men’s first prize was won by Mr. Scott with Mr. Fred Hill second. Consolation prizes were awarded Miss E. Hurlihy, Kaimata, and Mr. A. Gannaway. Good dance music was supplied by a local orchestra comprising Messrs. F. Hill, B. Dust and A. Gannaway. Mr. Dick Telfer, Mana Road. Ratapiko, is to be congratulated on his success in the ensilage competition. So far Mr. Telfer holds the highest marks for ensilage in North Taranaki and stands a good chance of securing the championship. ■ Mrs. M. Nolan is in the New Plymouth hospital.. The Rev. J. N. Thompson. Inglewood, conducted the monthly service in th* Ratapiko hall on Sunday afternoon. A very interesting sermon on the Maori, mission was given by Archdeacon. H. Raiti.
Mr. J. Moorby and M<*ss Doris Moor by. Okato, have been the guests of Mr. and Mr<s. G. Simpson. Miss Smith, New Plymouth, is staying with her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Lepper. Mana Road. A very unpleasant experience befel Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dodurski on Sunday. Mr. Dodunski, who was accompanied by his wife and Mr. and Mrs. Ben DodtinI ski, was driving his car towards Strat-
ford when the steering wheel broke. The car, which was fortunately travelling slowly, ran into the bank and capsized. The occupants received a severe shaking and minor cuts and bruises, but were fortunate to escape so lightly.
