OPUNAKE NEWS

MEETING OF TOWN BOARD. The Opunake Town Board’s monthly meeting was held on Monday evening. The chairman (Mr. A. J. Brennan) presided, other members present being Messrs. W. J. S. Dudley, H. Mantey, W. Gunson, H. Booker, F. Hammond and A. Raynor. The ranger reported that 30 head', of stock had been impounded and released during the month. The Railway Department notified the board that a commission would inquire into the desirability of continuing branch railway lines and that certain local bodies would be asked to. prepare evidence in each district where such lines were operating. As the Egmont County Council was not one of the local bodies mentioned in the circular the Town Board decided to forward a copy to that , council as farmers were more interested in the railway than the townspeople. The board will be represented in giving evidence before the commission.

The Pihama, Awatuna and Te Kiri districts of the Egmont county are very much interested in the matter, and it was considered steps should be -taken .immediately by the branches of the Farmers’ Union to see that their interests were not neglected at the inquiry. Mr. A. O’Brien, who has been clerk ,of the Opunake Town Board, intimated at. the last meeting of the board that he would shortly be retiring. The most imSortant local bodies were assisted into lie administrative stage by Mr. O’Brien. The power board and harbour board in the initial stages had the town bbard clerk to do the secretarial duties. The retirement takes place after a long term of faithful service.

A very successful dance was held at the Oaonui hall on Monday night. The hall was neatly decorated in blue, yellow and black streamers. Henderson's orchestra provided good dance music and the master of ceremonies was Mr. R. Green. The ladies’ committee provided an excellent supper. The special competition was won by Mr. Simpson; Mr. H. Ibboteon (secretary) organised and assisted materially to make the dance the social success- it was.

The prize-winners of the St. Patrick’s hall weekly euchre party were Miss B. O’Rorke 1, Mrs. Des .Forges 2; Mr. P. Foskin 1, Mr. R. Peat 2. Mcsdames Des Forges and J. .’Stevenson''and.'Messrs. D. Thomas and N. Reardon won other prizes. The winners at the Parish Hall euchre party on Monday night were Mrs. R. McCallum 1, Mrs. Malcolm consolation; Mr. C- McCutchan 1, Mr. W. Fake consolation.

Miss C. Arden, who is leaving Opunake, was entertained by the members of the Girls’ Hockey Club at an evening party at Mrs. S. R. Feaver’s residence on Monday evening. After the sociable part of the pi’vgr&mme Miss Arden was the recipient of a presentation from the members of an xylonite brush, comb and mirror as a token of goodwill and the interest she had taken in the club durin cr her term as secretary of the club. *Mr. J. O’Sullivan is having up-to-date business premises erected on the Main Street site known to old residents as W. D. Scott’s saleyards. .
