CASTAWAYS WISH TO STAY
FOUND ON LONELY ISLAND LIVING ON BIRDS AND FISH MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN By Telegraph Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 8.30 p.m. Townsville, Aug 5. The master of the steamer Taiping, from the East, discovered 35 castaways, including women and children, on Bird Island, 809 miles from Thursday Island. They had sheltered there for a month after being washed up in a 10-ton smaek and had lived on birds and fish. They were in need of fresh water, which was given them by the Taiping. — The castaways elected to remain on the island and were given food and other comforts. There was no sign of them when the Taiping passed the island on the return trip.
