NEW USE FOR BOYS
KEEPING THE ROADS CLEAN. A resident of a leading country town in New South Wales has found a new use for boys, upon whom the association of motorists pronounces a blessing. There had been so many flat tyres in the town that the citizen in question offered a substantial prize to the local schoolboy who gathered the most nails from the local roads within a given period. The result was that 20 of the boys each collected more than a pound of nails from the roads in a few hours. Any base suggestion that they might have put the nails there to win the prize will be sternly repudiated as a gross reflection on their honour. The clean-up of nails was followed by a hectic melon feast—a somewhat strange gastronomic orgy these cold days, but boys will be boys. ' _ Like many other small causes, this nail-gathering competition has led to quite a big movement —a local Clean Roads Brigade. Each of its members is pledged to remove from any road in the district, nails, horseshoes, broken glass • —' other impedimenta of motorists.
