ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCED. The engagement is announced in a London journal of Miss Joan Fry, the 24-years-old lawn tennis player, and Lieutenant Ashley Lakeman, of e the Royal Tank Corps. - Miss Fry, who is a daughter of Dr A. C. Fry ; of Mansion House, Stone, Staffordshire, has for the past five years been among the foremost women playere in the world. She is slim, brown-skinned, browneyed, and vivacious. She was formerly engaged to a South African solicito:, Mr. B. G. Pagdcn, whom she met duriog a tour with the British tennis team in that country in 1927, but in Octobe’, 1929, the engagement was broken off. Miss Fry came into prominence as a player in 1925, when she ‘reached the final of the singles championship at Wimbledon, but lost to Mlle. Lenglen. Her victories, have been numerous auu brilliant.
