MR. FORBES HONOURED
BIG CANTERBURY GATHERING. By Telegraph.—Press Association; Christchurch, Last Night.. At a gathering representative of all shades of political, opinion, attended by about 300 people, the Prime Minister, the Hon. G. W. Forbes, wa_ honoured by Canterbury residents on Saturday evening to mark the akainment for the first time, by a man born in this province of the highest office in the Dominion. # The chairman, Sir Heaton Rhodes, and Dr. John Guthrie, who proposed the toast of the guest of honour, both referred to Mr. Forbes’ uprightness of character. ! Mr. Forbes said he had never been at a i meeting where he had so many friends. He defended the Government’s taxation proposals, but deplored Canada’s action in increasing the tariff on New Zealand. I hope we shall be able to obtain more favourable terms,” he said. "It is a very short-siglited-policy on the part o> Canada as the balance'of trade is all mffier favour. We do not think we have been fairly treated.”
