Biggs, who is retiring from his position of foreman joiner of the New Plymouth Sash and Door Company’s Gill Street facto.,, was fare welled by his fellow employees on Friday evening. The general manager (Mr. A. E. R. Gilbert) presented Mr. Bigg w,th an oak writing desk, and, on behalf of the employees, with 'a case of pipes. Major-General R. Young, C. 8., C.M.G., D. 5.0., General Officer Commanding the New Zealand Forces, has accepted the invitation of the officers of the Taranaki Regiment to attend their annual reunion dinner in New Plymouth on August 23, provided he is not detained m Wellington on special business.

Arrangements are in train for the holding of a tactical course for officers of the Taranaki Regiment in New 1 ly- ■ mouth on August 23 and 24. Officers will attend entirely at their own volition, and at their own expewse, and ' country officers will probably be billeted in town. Major-General young, Brigadier Whyte and Col. Standish will probably all be present. Mr. Frederick T. Bridges has been appointed general manager of the Australian Mutual Provident Society in sue- ■ cession to the late Mr. H. W. Apperly. o Mr. Bridges was born in Sydney, and, like Mr. Apperly, attended the Cleveland Street School. He entered the ser- • vice of the A.M.P. Society in February 1876. In August, 1885, he was appointed to the position 'of accountant at Adelaide, and in September, 1889, was transferred to the actuarial department £' the head office. In September, 1895, he again went to Adelaide as resident secretary for South Australia, being transferred to a similar position at Brisbane in 1904. Five years later he was promoted to the position of resident - secretary for Victoria, rendered vacant by the death of Mr. W. J. Walker. In 1917 he became manager for Victoria, a position he occupied until January last year, when he was transferred to head office to act as general manager during the absence abroad of Mr. Apperly. Upon Mr. Apperly’s return to duty in March last Mr. Bridges was appointed assistant general manager.

The death occurred suddenly at New Plymouth yesterday morning of , Air. Herbert Nicholson at the age of 76 years. Mr. Nicholson, who was born in Yorkshire, England, came to New Zealand as a boy, and was educated at the Christchurch Grammar School, the forerunner of the present Christchurch Boys’ High School. He spent much of his youth on his fathers faiin at Cawood, near Patea. Later he came ■to New Plymouth and subsequently went from New Plymouth to London to study dentistry at the Royal Dental Hospital. 'laving completed his course he went to Maryborough, Queensland, where he practised his profession until 1918. In that year he relinquished hie practice and came to live in retirement in New Plymouth, where he has remained ever since. He has been ailing for the last two years, but his death came very suddenly. Mr. Nicholson was a member of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce. He is survived by his widow and two child-ren—-Miss Frances Nicholson (New Plymouth) and Air. Murray Nicholson ‘(Auckland), and his sister, Miss Emily JJicholson (New Plymouth).
