BOOKMAKER SENT TO GAOL. SENTENCE OF NINE MONTHS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Stanley William Findlay, for carrying on the business of a bookmaker, was sentenced by the Chief Justice (Sir Michael Myers) to nine months’ imprisonment. The Chief Justice said he could not allow the law to be flouted, defied and broken with impunity. Jack Hawes was sentenced to 18 months’ hard labour and Joseph Newton to 12 months’ hard labour for having housebreaking implements in their possession, and for breaking and entering. John O’Donnell, for indecent assault on a female, was ordered 12 months’ reformative imprisonment. Charles Patrick McAllister was sentenced to two years’ hard labour for forging and uttering. There were several similar convictions against him, and he was warned that if he came before the Court again he would be declared a habitual criminal.
