LOCAL AND GENERAL

The general committee of the Taranaki Agricultural Society yesterdav offered its to Mr. P. J. Peterson, Brixton, on -the fact that his.. three-year-old heifer Ivondale Silver Rainbow had created a world's record for twice ar day milking with about 9591b5. of fat. Ivondale. Silver Rainbow is by Xenia’s. Oxford Lad from Ivondale Rainbow’s Lass. , “And it .was a hat like that?” asked counsel of a Maori witness during the hearing of a case at the Waitara Court yesterday. “No, there wag none of this stuff on it” (pointing to the piece of white police “exhibit” paper in the band).. -Counsel asked him whether the hat was new at the time, and again the witness caused laughter by assuring the, court that the decidedly .dirty hat on the table was a new one. “Wnen there is only one witness on each side it is almost impossible to come to a decision,” said Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., in dismissing a traffic by-law case in the Magistrate’s Court at Auckland on Wednesday. “In this case one witness eays one tiling and the other something altogether different. It is much simpler to give judgment when there are several witnesses.”

A schoolgirl witness for the police in a motor case heard in the Waitara Court yesterday was. being shown a plan of the. cross-roads where the collision occurred. Counsel for defendant was leaning back in his chair waiting for the evidence to proceed. The girl was explaining to the constable that the smash occurred “at that spot there.” “What spot?” asked counsel jumping to his feet and reaching for the paper. The plan was his and, as he sat down he turned to the magistrate and said, “my plan and just the epot I didn’t want witness to see.”

The Opunake Harbour Board yesterday adopted the recommendation of the finance committee that the rate for the ensuing year be 1 49-50 d in the £1 over the town area and 33-50 d in the £1 over he county area, and formal notice was given of the intention to strike that rate at the next meeting. The rate will produce a revenue of £4273 7s Id, of which the town district on a valuation of £180,068 will provide £1562 and the county area on a valuation of £1,007,774 will provide £2771 5s lid. Last year the rate was 2Jd in the £1 over the town area and id in the £1 over the county area, but the valuation of the district has been increased since then, particularly in the county, which has recently been re-valued, and consequently the rate in the £ has been reduced, though the amount to be raised is practically the same. Last year with a valuation of £175,033 the town area provided on a 2£d rate ’the sum of £1645 2s and the county with a valuation of £833,038 on a id rate provided £2603 4s.

This is the season for dairy bonus payments. That fact was advanced yesterday as the reason for the exceptionally large crowds in New Plymouth in the afternoon and evening. All the garages were reported to be filled to capacity with cars from the country; indeed from some establishments there was an overflow onto the streets. The parking places in the side streets were similarly congested, tbe Lues of care being much longer thin usual. The appearance of Devon Street was reminiscent of the Christmas shopping period and for some hours there were frequent blocks of pedestrians on the footpaths. During the past week many thousands of pounds have been distributed in bonuses amongst dairy farmers in North Taranaki, and there are still large sums to be paid. One dairy company secretary informed a reporter that the bonuses to three of his factories totalled £lB,OOO. Part of this he paid last week, and part yesterday, while the balance will be paid on Wednesday. Suppliers to another factory near New Plymouth received last Wednesday over £7OOO in bonuses. N€xt Wednesday £3OOO will be paid at one annual meeting and the following Wednesday a further £BOOO will be distributed. “Since July 20 the bonuses paid through one group of three factories has /amounted to £7728, while two other companies have recently disbursed £l5OO. In three weeks’ time nearly £3500 will be paid as bonuses at another factory. The Venerable Archdeacon Hori Haiti, Archdeacon of the Maoris in the Waikato Diocese, will preach in St. Mary’s Church on Sunday evening. It is the first occasion on which he has been able to‘ visit New Plymouth, and he comes to plead the cause of the Maori. mission to which all offertories on Sunday throughout the diocese will be given. The photographs of debut antes at the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club’s ball at Waverley, which are reproduced to-day on page 26, were taken by Torhquist Studios, New Plymouth. The popular fortnightly Sunday night concert given by the Taranaki Regimental Band and assisting artists will be held in. the Empire Theatre, New Plymouth, tomorrow evening at BJS. The band programme will include the following:—March “Jack O’ Lantern” (Rimmer),' hymn, “Limington” (Arr McLeod), selection, “Irish Beauties” (Greenwood), waltz, “Septembre” (Felix Godin), popular item, “Sleep Baby Sleep” (Schuster), selection. “Maritana” (Wallace), lullaby “Alabama” (De Voll), classic, “Humowesque’ (Dvorak), march, “Semper Fidelis” (Greenwood). The Melbourne’s show windows are attracting much attention, due to the mteresting character of the bargains displayed. There is no doubt whatever that very eon* siderable savinga can be effected by : those in a position to buy.* ■ - ! . -<• ;■ ' l
