“SHOULD BACHELORS BE TAXED?” In conjunction with Hie North Tara l naki branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute the New Plymouth Debating Society last night held its - first public debate of the season in the Savage Club room. M r - H, W. Insull presided and Mr. H. R. Billing acted as judge. The subject was “That bachelors should be taxed as bachelors.” The ease for the affirmative was taken by representatives of the society, Messrs. G. Macallan (leader), Geddes, C. Strombom and K. Staunton. The motion was opposed by the institute-through Messrs. M. Goldsbury (leader), J. Shimin and W. L. Wagstaff. The institute’s fourth speaker could not be present, so as compensation Mr. Goldsbury’s scheduled time for reply was doubled. The voting was equal each way when the motion was put to the meeting, but it was carried on the casting vote of the chairman. This decision was subsequently reversed by the judge. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Billing and to the teachers who took part in the debate. The next ordinary debate of the society will be held on August 15 upefti the proposition “That the white Australia and New Zealand policy should be abandoned.”
