OLD GIRLS’ BALL

VERY SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. Past standards of excellence were eclipsed by the 1930 Old Girls’ ball, which wm held at the Workers’ Social Hall, New Plymouth, last night. From every point of view the function was a success, and despite the bitter mountain wind over 200 people were present, making the hall seem almost small. Original and striking, decorations changed the whole aspect of the hall, brightening it and adding an air of gaiety to the scene. From the centre broad bands of yellow streamers dilated like the ribbons in a giant maypole dance. Lined along the ceiling above the main mass of the decoration Chinese lanterns swung. Around the sides were rows of greenery, great fronds of treeferns, convolvulus -and blooming wattle. Here and there solitary balloons edged their way out of the foliage and at the corners of the hall and on the wings of the stage balloons-clustered in profusion like grapes grown for some Gargantuan repast. The supper tables were decorated with wattle. - In front of a heap of greenery which backed the stage was McNeill’s orchestra, which played the latest dance numbers. The committee to whom the credit ef the ball is due included Misses M. Brodie, W. Gayton, C. Greatbatch, D. Rennell, D. Anderson, L. Balharry, N. Gannaway, M. Grace, B. Hawkins, IL Bullock, J. Pullen and J. Corney. The chaperones were Mesdames W- H. Moyee, H. R. Billing, Misses D. N. Allan and N. L McLean.
