UNEMPLOYED CARPENTERS
DEPUTATION TO THE PREMIER By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, July 31, A deputation from the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners waited on Mr. G.W. Forbes to-day with regard to unemployment, suggesting among other things'the raising of the school age, so that fathers would not be under the need of finding ■ work for their boys when they could not find work for themselves; also the setting aside of part of the unemployment fund for the compulsory retirement of aged workers, the shortening of the working day to, say, six hours, more latitude in advancing loans to workers, greater facilities for the employment of carpenters on public works, that Parliament Buildings should be completed, and other necessary public buildings erected. Mr. Forbes promised to go into the matters raised with the Public Works unemployment officer. lie would see what could be done in the matter of employing more carpenters.
