RENT RESTRICTION BILL I’ASSED.

PRIVATE MEASURES INTRODUCED

Wellington, Last Night,

The Rent Restriction Bill was put through all staged and passed to-day by the Legislative Council. The Hon. W, Earnshaw described the Bill as another sop to the extreme section of the Labour Barty, which was at present dominating Parliament. The Hon. M. Fagan supported tho Bill, although he admitted that the need for it was diminishing. In reply Hon. R. Masters said reports compiled by the Labour Department showed that need existed for the measure.

The Imprest Supply Bill was received from the House and passed.

Spcakine" on the third reading the lion. G. i?. Thomson urged the Government to consider setting up a fisheries council. He also suggested that some method of grading fish for export might be considered and that the Government might make advances to those engaged in tho fishing industry. Mr. Thomson also drew attention to the position of the whaling industry in the Ross Sea and gave figures regarding the production of oil.

Sir James Allen said there were ships whaling in the Ross Sea without a license, and he suggested that the question of defining territorial limits should be discussed at the Imperial Conference.

Mr. Masters undertook to bring the matters under the notice of the Government.

At 4 p.m. the Council adjourned until August 13. In the House of Representatives notice was given of the intention to introduce the following Bills; Local Elections and Polls Amendment Bill (Mr. J. McCombs), Hawke’s Bay County Empowering Bill (Mr. H. M. Campbell). The tollowing Bills were introduced and read a first time: Auckland City ar Motuihi Empowering Bill (Mr. M. J Savage), Invalid Pensions Bill (Mr. J. O’Brien),

The Rent Restriction. Bill was reported from the Legislative Council without amendment.
