"FRESH START IN LIFE”
FORGER ADMITS HIS -GRIMES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. Becauss he wished to go to Australia to make a fresh start in life Albert James Barnes, aged 33, labourer, took the cheque bok of his employer, William Hoye, Clevedon, and forged three cheques of a total value of £24 4s 10d. The first, for £lO, was presented and cashed at a bank in Papakura. The second he gave in payment for goods at a city store, but it was not honoured. The third was cashed for him oy a storekeepei 1 at Clevedon. Barnes pleaded guilty to tho charges when he appeared in the Police Court to-day and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Detective Nalder described how two hours before the Niagara sailed for Sydney on July 14 he and two other detectives located Barnes on the vessel. He had booked under his own name as a steerage passenger to Sydney. In his possession were found the goods obtained from the city firm.
