DECLINE IN RECRUITING

HIGH PERCENTAGE OF REJECTS DISCUSSION IN THE. COMMONSBy Telegraph—Press Assn.—-Copyright. . Rec. 7 p.m. London, July 30. A long discussion on the decline in army recruiting occurred in the House of Commons to-day. Several members urged Mr. T. Shaw, Minister of War, to give a lead in advocating recruiting from the platform. Mr. Shaw, commenting on the heavy percentage of rejection on account of physical deficiencies, pointed out that most young men now offering were war children. Only the working classes were now joining the infantry. /He recently ■visited Wincliester, Oxford, Rugby, Harrow and Eton and saw there hundreds of thousands of young men free from economic anxieties who would be inestimably benefited, by a few years in the, army. Why did they not join and repair the infantry .shortage, -(Labour cheers and cries; They should go into the ranks!.)

Major Glyn: Remember they did e.o' in war time. (Opposition cheers.)
