CANADA’S BUTTER IMPORTS

CONCESSION TO NEW ZEALAND.

NEGOTIATIONS TO COMMENCE. By Telegraph.—Press- Association. Wellington, Last Night. In a statement to the House of Representatives to-night on the Canadian and New Zealand tariff negotiations, the Prime Minister said the Canadian Government recently gave the. New Zealand Government notice-that the concession granted on New Zealand butter was to be withdrawn on October 12 next. The effect of this action would be that the duty, which was now one cent, per lb., -would be increased to four cents per lb. The two Governments had been discussing -the matter, and had arranged that a conference between the-represen-tatives of both countries should take place as soon as possible. The New Zealand Government had been endeavouring to induce the Canadian Government not to impose increased duty until a tariff agreement could be made and implemented by legislation in New Zealand. Owing’to the Canadian general elections, which were about to take place, it had not been possible satisfactorily to settle this point. It was, however, in Mr. Forbes’ opinion, very important that negotiations between the two Governments should be commenced at an early date. We have accordingly arranged that Dr. G. Craig, Comptroller of Customs, should leave for Canada on August 12 to enter upon discussions with the appropriate authorfties at Ottawa, and to carry the matter as far as possible before the Imperial Conference. The Comptroller of Customs would then proceed to London to assist at the Imperial Conference, when tariff and economic matters were being discussed.”
