CITIZENS’ CANDIDATE WINS. ' By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night.' The by-election for the City Council caused by the death of Councillor I*. Cooke resulted in the return of A. A. McLachlan (Citizens’ Association), with 9856 votes. G. M. Thurston (Labour) polled 5824 and C. S. Trillo (Independent) 913. The strength of the parties now on the council is; Citizens 10, Labour 6, Independent 1. At the election the parties were: Citizens 8, Labour 8, Independent 1, and Labour, with the support of the Independent, had control.
