RAHOTU NEWS

SOCIAL AND PERSONAL.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

It has been decided to close the pictures on Saturday nights as such a number now go to Opunake to hear the Talkies. Rahotu is very dreary on a Saturday night, but Monday evenings seem quite lively as a euchre party is always held for some cause or another. The euchre party last Monday was well attended, although the night was dark and cold. The first prize for ladies was won by Mrs. Laurence Billing and the second by Mrs. W. Clarke, the men’s first prize by Mr. J. Nielson and the second by Mr. J. Williamson. Mrs. W. R. Wright won the consolation prize of a bag of sweets. The ladies supplied supper. Mr. and Mrs. J. Looney are now living in Rahotu to be near their sons and daughter, and with the change Mr. Looney’s health is much improved. When on the return journey from their holiday to Auckland, Bay of Plenty and other parts, Mr. C. Tyrrell and Mr. R. Pen warden had the misfortune to meet with an accident, which might have been very serious. Their little car skidded near Porirua and fell into a river and was much damaged. Both young men are nearly well now. though they suffered cuts and bruises which needed medical attention. The car was left at Wellington for repairs. Mrs. A. Chapman, with her daughters, Mrs. H. Hopkins and Miss Chapman, ia staying with her sons for a few days. Several of the friends of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Hodson went to' Pihama from here to welcome them home in the usual “tin-can” style. Soon the tin

cans will he scarce if many more are needed,'and it seems they will be. A meeting of dairy representatives is being held to' consider the question of appointing a farm dairy instructor for a group of factories along the coast — Oaonui, Rahotu, Kahui, Pungarchu and Omata.

The local factory’s annual meeting is to be held during the first week in August. The Rahotu Hall has had a new porch put on the side entrance and the hall has been painted. Mr. Brophy’s new house on the main road is nearly completed, and fills in a big space.
