GIANT CREAM VATS

RAILWAY’S DELICATE TASK. An Auckland-built cream vat, 3J tana in weight, was loaded on to a railway truck in the Auckland station yards on Monday afternoon for conveyance to Whangarei, where it will be installed in the Whangarei Dairy Company’s factory. Great care had to be exercised in securing the vat in the centre of the Truck, as its size only just permitted ita passage through the tunnels on the ucrthern - line. There was only one inch to spare on each side in the smallest tunnel, that at Alakarau. ■ •• The vat, which has a. capacity of 2000 gallons, is of the direct expansion type and is the first Auckland-made apparatus to be lined inside with pure instead of copper or glass. It was constructed at a cost of between £6OO and’ £7OO. Another yat, designed to hold 2500 gallons, is being built for the Tamaki Dairy Company. ' '■'•/ The vat is used for cooling, and etor* ing purposes. It receives the cream after being pasteurised and a cooling mixture of water and brine is circulated through an all-metal jacket surrounding the inner nickel lining. After the temperature has thus been reduced, tie cream passes into the churns.
