BOY LOSES HIS FINGERS
£612 COMPENSATION GRANTED. By Telegraph.—Pres# Association. Auckland, Last Night. The misfortune of a boy who lost the thumb and all the fingers of his right hand on the first day of his employment was the subject of a claim heard by the Arbitration Court to-day. The claimant was Maurice Austin Mason, aged 15, who sought compensation from his employer, Henry T. Read, butcher of Mount Eden. On February 3 the boy was mincing meat for sausages when he over-balanced and his right hand became entangled in the mincing machine with the result that the thumb and the fingers were amputated. Counsel said the boy had not received any wages and he was employed on the morning of the accident for the first time.
The Court awarded compensation totalling £612.
